Proteins Simplified

Back to News and Articles

Proteins are one of the three macronutrients your body needs to function. Dietary protein provides the raw materials that the body uses to make its own variety of proteins that it needs. Protein can come from both plants and animals. It is used for structure (such as rebuilding muscles) and also to regulate cell functions.

The most concentrated proteins come from animal sources, but they also a source of saturated fats. Plants also provide good sources of protein. It is important to get a variety of proteins so the body can make repairs and stay healthy.

Good proteins include lean meats, fish, poultry, low-fat dairy products, and eggs.

Unfavorable proteins include processed meats (like hot dogs), fatty cuts of meat, as well as organ meats.

Good sources of plant protein include legumes, nuts and seeds.

Complete protein powders also contain all the essential proteins. There are many kinds of protein powders, made either from animal proteins or plant proteins.
